Si bien la principal causa de accidentes ferroviarios se deben fundamentalmente  a factores humanos, la segunda causa se debe a roturas de rieles, las cuales son evitables si su detección se logra hacer a tiempo.

La inspección realizada desde la superficie de rodadura, permite la detección de fisuras ubicadas en un abanico de ángulos que logran cubrir la totalidad de fallas incluidas en los manuales y catálogos de defectos en rieles ferrroviarios en servicio.
